More towns become CSG-free

Lock the Gate Tweed spokesman Michael McNamara says residents are appalled the CSG industry has made its way to the Tweed valley.
Lock the Gate Tweed spokesman Michael McNamara says residents are appalled the CSG industry has made its way to the Tweed valley.

CHILLINGHAM has become the latest village to join the push for a CSG-free Tweed.

At a meeting held last Monday night, residents unanimously supported the proposition that Chillingham should be coal seam gas - free and resolved to conduct road surveys to gather the views of their friends and neighbours.

"Residents were appalled that an industry such as coal seam gas could come to the Tweed valley, especially to an area like Chillingham," said Lock the Gate Tweed spokesperson Michael McNamara.

"Chillingham was the first community in the Tweed to go 'plastic bag free' so it is no surprise that the community wants to be CSG-free.

"Some of the community members who attended are so keen to get the process underway that they took away road surveys with them to get started on the task of seeking the views of other members of the community."

A follow-up meeting will be held at the hall on Wednesday July 25at 7pm to co-ordinate the road surveys and plan for a community celebration that will be held to declare certain roads as CSG-free.

"This follow-up meeting will be a great opportunity for members of the Chillingham community who were unable to get to the meeting tonight to find out more and to get involved in protecting their community," Mr McNamara said.

Public meetings will be held at Uki this Saturday in the community hall, at Tumbulgum on Monday July 23 in the local hall, at Burringbar on Tuesday July 24 in the Burringbar Sports Club and at Stokers Siding on Thursday July 26 in the community hall.

The Uki meeting will start at 3pm and all the others will commence at 7pm.

"I invite anyone interested in implementing the CSG-free Communities initiative in their community to contact me on 6679 3013 or by email at lockthegate.tweed@gmail.com to organise a community meeting," Mr McNamara said.
