MULLUMBIMBY is the latest town in the Northern Rivers to launch a charity food bank, the second for Byron Shire.

Mullumbimby Uniting Church Food Bank attracted 15 registrations on its first day on Thursday from single mums, to pensioners and students.

Organiser Gill Lomath said she was touched by both the number of new members who signed up on such a wet and windy day and also the 17 volunteers who turned out to help from various local churches and the general community.

"It makes me quite teary when I think of these people here because they're really caring," Mrs Lomath said.

The food bank provides groceries to registered members at a fraction of their retail price

Fresh produce like oranges, potatoes and onions are free.

Mrs Lomath said on their first day they offered 20 different grocery items with that number to be greatly expanded in weeks to come.

But the food bank workers also provide a cup of tea and coffee and a listening ear to people who may be doing it tough.

"It's a help and just a kind word and a pat on the back," said volunteer Sue Walker.

Thanks to a donation from a local chemist this week which was refitting its shop, the food bank now boasts a laminated counter.

The C3 Church at Byron Bay already operates a similar operation every Thursday which has hundreds of members.

The Mullumbimby Uniting Church Food Bank will open every Thursday from 9.30am - 12.

A concession card is required to sign up.
