IN A world of technical gadgetry, Toowoomba mothers are turning to an age-old remedy to soothe their teething babies.
Amber teething jewellery has become the latest fad in parenting circles.
Judy Wielandt, from Southtown Pharmacy, has been overwhelmed by mums seeking the product.
"Wearing them against the skin soothes the babies," Ms Wielandt said.
"Mothers are coming back to tell us how fantastic they are and how they have tried other things that just don't compare.
"They went on sale last November after customers would come in and ask for them.
"Word of mouth got around that we sold them and they just sell themselves now."
According to manufacturers, the product warms against the skin, releasing very small amounts of healing oils which are then absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.
They claim the oils then calm the infant.
Avalon Crystals sells the products and staff members have also noticed a dramatic increase in sales.
"We had never heard of them until mums started asking for them," Carlyn Davis, from the Ruthven St retailer, said.
"As well as teething problems, they actually help behavioural problems and health issues in any child, not just infants.
"In fact, we all (staff members) wear them for pain relief."
The Office of Fair Trading has also received reports of an increased use of amber teething necklaces.
It is unable to state whether the therapeutic claims for these types of teething necklaces are true and therefore does not support the use of these products.
