MURWILLUMBAH'S SES faced an emergency of its own last year when a landslide severely damaged the service's headquarters.

The organisation's emergency equipment storage area was damaged leaving the service without a secure location to house its valuable rescue boats, storm response trailer and tools such as tarps, ropes and sandbags.

Murwillumbah's SES has been the lucky recipient of assistance which arrived in the shape of a $15,000 donation by Australian Steel manufacturer Colorbond, a division of BlueScope Steel.

The SES will use the donation to create a new storage shed which will house the organisation's vital equipment bays.

SES unit controller Chris Chrisostomos said he was overwhelmed by the grant award.

"We are very grateful for BlueScope Steel's generous support.

"The grant will help us rebuild the storage buildings that we lost last year and have been unable to replace.

Murwillumbah SES volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours of time to the community so it is nice to feel that the help we have given out is coming back to us and allowing us to further our work," Mr Chrisostomos said.

The $15,000 donation is part of Colorbond's Help a Mate competition, which is one of the largest community programs of its kind and calls on people from all over the country to nominate friends and family who require assistance to replace a damaged shed or to build a new one.

Colorbond national sales manager Wal Nicolussi said Help a Mate resulted from the desire to help people who could benefit from having a new or replacement shed built.

"Whether it is a local farmer in need, a local business that is growing or a mate who's simply doing it tough, we hope to hear from anyone who feels they know someone deserving of a new shed," Mr Nicolussi said.
