RICHMOND coalition candidate Matthew Fraser has released an online guide to help parents protect their children against online dangers, including cyber bullying.

Mr Fraser said Christmas 2012 would see more electronic devices in the hands of children than ever before and every parent needed to ask some questions about the electronic gifts they bought their kids.

"When I talk to parents, they are telling me that there will be more iPad minis, iPods, laptops and gaming devices like Playstation Vita, Xbox 360 and Wii than ever before," he said.

"However, many parents don't know that the gift does mean another internet connection in the house."

The key to keeping children safe from online dangers was for parents to understand the technology they were giving their kids.

Parents should find out what their gifts could do so they could set appropriate boundaries to protect their children.

"Many parents don't know how many devices in their house actually allow their children to get online, interact with other people and make purchases.

"Parents have a responsibility to help children navigate the online world as they do to teach children about stranger danger and bicycle safety," Mr Fraser said.

"This is above politics.

"It's a challenge for parents, teachers, carers and governments to help prepare children for both the opportunities as well as dangers they may face online."
