AN off-duty police officer arrested a man after an assault on a mother and her teenage son outside Kingscliff Shopping Centre on Thursday afternoon.

Police allege a 31-year-old man confronted the pair about 3.30pm and assaulted both.

The off-duty officer restrained a 31-year-old Kingscliff man until other officers arrived.

The man has been charged and refused bail.

He will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court later today.
