One ATM in Nimbin and it keeps breaking down

MICHAEL BALDERSTONE: They’ve got a virtual monopoly on banking in the town ... they could do better.
MICHAEL BALDERSTONE: They’ve got a virtual monopoly on banking in the town ... they could do better.

WHILE the community of Nimbin is generally associated with an alternative lifestyle, not that of a high-tech modern world, that hasn't stopped anger rising over what has become the town joke: their ATM.

The ATM, owned privately through rediATM, stands in the window of the pharmacy on the main street and has a habit of breaking down, said fed-up local Michael Balderstone, of the Nimbin Hemp Embassy.

"It seems every really busy holiday period, the ATM breaks down," Mr Balderstone said.

"It's the only one in town, except for in the pub. It's a weakness in the system."

Mr Balderstone said that he constantly had tourists walk into the Hemp Embassy or Museum to ask where the nearest ATM was, only for them to return five minutes later reporting that it's out of order.

"We've become a popular tourist town, but every big weekend, Mardi Grass, the ATM stops working," he said.

"It's really frustrating for everybody."

Mr Balderstone said it was about time that those behind the ATM upgrade the machine, or install another in the town.

"This is not a new whinge. It's time they upgraded," he said.

"They've got a virtual monopoly on banking in the town, I reckon they could do better by our community.

"This is the modern world and people expect to be able to (use an ATM)."

Mr Balderstone said that he'd been told personally that some business owners in the town were considering getting EFTPOS to soothe the stress of the problem caused by the ATM.

A representative from the management team behind the Nimbin rediATM confirmed that the ATM had been out of action over New Year's and that they apologised for anyone caught out over this time, however to their knowledge, this was an isolated incident and shouldn't be happening on a repeated basis.
