STAND up paddle boarding has taken off in the Tweed, with multiple venues offering board hire and waterways flooded with people keen to give the sport a try.

Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Cudgen Creek and other locations have been full of residents and tourists practicing before they take on the waves at local beaches.

Trevor "Big Trev" Arbon runs Big Trevs Water Sports hire service at Jack Evans Boat Harbour and said that he had noticed a big growth in the sport.

"More and more people are coming to hire the boards out," he said.

"It just keeps growing and growing.

"It's popular in the rivers and down here at my beautiful Jack Evans."

Mr Arbon said that people picked up the sport quickly and were often standing up in minutes.

"I've had people up in about five minutes," he said.

"The boards are so buoyant and thick and once people get it, it just comes naturally."

Mr Arbon said that paddle boarding was excellent exercise and helped keep participants fit and healthy.

"I had one guy who was 15 stone and now he's down to 12," he said.

"He's been coming here for about three months now."

The water sports guru hires out a variety of other equipment and found that more people were noticing he also hired paddle boards as well.

"I've been doing it for about 7 years," he said.

"A Hawaiian guy originally taught me how to do it."

The sport was derived in Polynesia and achieved popularity in Hawaii, where it was rumoured to offer an alternative way for surfers to train when waves were down.
