AFTER she gave birth to their baby Phoenix last week, Goonellabah's Melanie Davis said her late partner Glenn Murphy gave her the greatest gift possible.

"To have this little part of him to carry on is the most amazing gift he could have given me," she said.

Mr Murphy died on January 17 when a westbound car lost control on Bangalow Rd at Binnaburra and smashed into the car he and a friend were travelling in to a basketball game at Byron Bay.

At the time Ms Davis was 18 weeks pregnant with Phoenix, the couple's second child together.

"It was a very difficult time but being pregnant held me together because I knew I had to be strong for my baby," Ms Davis said.

With a photo of Glenn watching over her, Ms Davies gave birth to 4.63kg Phoenix on July 3 at Lismore hospital after three-and-a-half hours in labour.

Choking back tears, Ms Davis said raising Phoenix without his father around will be very difficult. "It's going to be hard because Glenn was such a good dad," she said. "He did a lot, he was a real hands-on father."

Ms Davis said with the many photos of Glenn around the house his memory would live on through his children.

"We will make sure Phoenix knows his dad and knows how amazing he was."

She said the support of family, friends and his basketball mates had been amazing.

"It's going to be hard to do it by myself but I know I can.

"I have lots of friends and family for support."

"I just want to make Glenn proud of me and his boys."

Ms Davis said after finding out the sex of their baby she knew Glenn would be happy to have three boys.

"Glenn was showing off the scan to everyone at Christmas time, he was so proud.

"I chose the name Phoenix because a Phoenix is a mythical bird that rose from the ashes and he is my little Phoenix."

Mr Murphy is survived by Melanie and his three children Kyen, 8, Jayden, 15 months and Phoenix.
