Plenty to keep the table well stocked as fish keep biting

EARLY shoppers who cleared up their Christmas gift list early have had no trouble in finding fish during the past week.

Offshore reports have been a bit slim, but there are good fish to be taken around the headlands and along the beaches.

In the estuaries, the big Christmas tides have slowed up some activity because of the fast-moving currents, but near the top and bottom of the tides, there has been plenty of activity.

The warmer weather has also seen the upper river anglers targeting bass, which are being taken in some numbers.

The Seelands area has been fishing particularly well, with Ian Beadman of South Grafton scoring one of 1.49kg, on a lure.

Shannon O'Meara of South fished the same area and brought in one of 1.3kg

Krystelle Lentfer of South tried her luck in local waters and landed a bass of 930g on a lure.

Further down towards the entrance, Nathan Bowles of Swan Creek ventured into the Coldstream, a spot which several anglers have recommended to me, for a fish of 1.25kg.

The Middle Wall and well upstream to above Maclean around Rocky Mouth and the Broadwater, have seen plenty of plate-size bream biting (as well as quite a few throwbacks)

Biggest was weighed in from the Middle Wall by Brian Gregg, a holidaymaker from Yandina in Queensland.

Adrian Skinner of South Grafton scored one of 900g at Wooli.

Whiting are still on the bite in the upper reaches of Oyster Channel, although the largest weighed in came from Browns Rocks and was taken on a prawn bait by Col Doust of Glen Innes.

With the advent of the summer months, the big flathead have moved close to the entrance and can also be caught on the beaches near the headlands.

Biggest this week was taken at the Old Ferry Approach at Iluka by John Murphy of Iluka

On the other side of the river, at the top end of Oyster Channel near Josh's Island, Peter Farlow of Brisbane landed one of 3.9kg

Fishing has been particularly good around the rocks, with Mischa Porter of Iluka scoring a tailor of 3.106kg on mullet bait from Shark Bay.

Ellis Fisher from Cabarita, did particularly well to land a 25kg jewfish from the rocks at Woody head, using a lure.

There has been plenty of activity offshore, with mackerel starting to show in some numbers.

Spud Murphy of Iluka ( no relation to the flathead angler John ) was quite excited about his 5kg spotted mackerel taken off Woody , and promising better prospects in the next few weeks.

Young Mitchell Hope of Yamba fished out wide off Sandon and brought in a small marlin which tipped the scales at 21kg.

Mitchell made his catch on a lure.

Although there is no section for game fish, offshore anglers are likely to tangle with this species almost anywhere well offshore at this time of the day, whether or not they are rigged for game fish

And mangrove jack are still on the bite close to the entrance.

Paul Jackson of Yamba landed two from the Yamba Wall, weighing 1.3kg and 1kg, both on pilchard bait.

Visiting anglers are reminded that if they have scored the best of species in any week, they can claim an attractive certificate from the offices of the Daily Examiner in either Yamba or Grafton to record the event.
