IF ONLY New South Welshmen could play rugby league as well as they donated blood.

With game one of this year's State of Origin series around the corner, the southerners hold a significant lead in the Donate for your State challenge and the Red Cross is calling on Queenslanders to fight back.

More than 3000 Blues supporters donated in the first week of the challenge, while Queensland just passed the 2500 mark.

But Red Cross spokeswoman Chole Cutler said there was still time left to donate before the competition closed before Origin 3.

"We're asking people to make it their goal to give blood for Queensland this Origin series," Ms Cutler said.

"The Maroons are giving blood for Queensland on the field.

"It's time for people to roll up their sleeves and show what colour they bleed.

"It only takes an hour of your time and your donation will help save up to three lives."

An added incentive for Queenslanders is their representative for the challenge - none other than retiring hard man Petero Civoniceva.

Big Petero is calling on his state to show their support for the Maroons and the Red Cross by donating blood and putting some more silverware in the Sunshine State's trophy cabinet.
