THE Kirkwood Rd road extension is advancing in leaps and bounds with the completion of the roundabout section of stage one.
Tweed Shire Council foreman Jim Rosolen said the area of the roundabout was at the pre-load stage and will now need to settle for at least the next six months.
"The earth at the roundabout section has already dropped one metre and we're hoping it won't drop too much more," Mr Rosolen said.
Crews are now working on the entry ramp which will connect the still to be completed roundabout with the Pacific Hwy and are busy bringing the road up to the level of the highway.
"One section of the entry ramp will be asphalt and part will be concrete to match the surface of the highway," Mr Rosolen said.
Work on the exit onto the Pacific Hwy allowing traffic to head north is also in progress and both sections are planned to be finished in the middle of next year.
Stage one includes the building of the extension of Kirkwood Rd which is nearing completion with the road surface now showing its asphalt surface."
"There's one more layer to go and then the Kirkwood Rd extension surface is finished," Mr Rosolen said.
On the other side of the highway, work on the 'west borrowed' site is continuing with the shot-creek cover on the northerly incline proceeding.
Shot-creek is a concrete spray which is used to cover the reinforcement steel bars installed into the hillside to prevent landslides.
Over the last few weeks motorists have expressed their surprise and anger at the limited speed allowed on the Pacific Hwy near the Kirkwood Rd extension.Mr Rosolen said because of the concrete barriers which separate the highway from the building site, Road and Maritime Services regulations imposed an 80 km/h speed limit.
The Kirkwood Rd project is part of a $34.5 million Pacific Hwy Road Network Master Plan which was designed to accommodate the Tweed's growing population.
Work on stage one is expected to be completed in the middle of next year while the future of stage two which includes a new bridge over the highway connecting Kirkwood Rd with Tweed West remains uncertain.
