Monumental mischief sees pecker piece disappear

The sculpture at Kenilworth

THEY say it's been a total cock-up. Locals have likened a new sculpture, designed to enhance the Kenilworth streetscape, to a penis.

The sculpture, inspired by the Mary River and featuring a turtle and lungfish, has earned the unfortunate nickname of d*ck-fish - or DF for short - since it was erected a week ago.

Most locals declined to put their names to their comments but sniggered when asked for their opinions.

"It looks like a chrome cock," one man said.

"It looks like a penis coming out of the ground with a fish coming out of it," another said.

The residents' dissatisfaction was compounded by the knowledge that most did not want it in the first place.

Artist Cezary Stulgis, a painter, sculptor and designer with experience on large landscape projects, initially was awarded the $20,000 commission to create a new entry statement sign for the town.

When the design and two others by Mr Stulgis went to a public vote, most respondents said they would prefer to stick with the town's entry signs depicting dairying scenes.

Divisional councillor Greg Rogerson, who inherited the project from previous councillor Paul Tatton, said the council already had commissioned Mr Stulgis for a sculpture.

Reader poll

What do you think of the sculpture?

This poll ended on 22 March 2013.

It's art, you ignorant fools - 9%

Bahahahaha.... - 90%

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

Cr Rogerson arranged for the old signs to be refurbished and the new sculpture, the most popular of Mr Stulgis's three designs, was positioned at the edge of the town's park.

Cr Rogerson said he could not comment directly on locals' criticism of the statue's appearance.

"I haven't personally seen it," he said on Wednesday. "I've had nothing to do with it. The community voted on it."

Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce vice-president Mary Ann Law was non-committal and non-plussed about the sculpture.

"I don't think we really need to have an opinion one way or the other," she said.

"It's always nice to have some art around but it's not a particularly attractive piece of artwork."

Another source said the finished piece did not adequat

ely resemble the original concept put to the vote. "It's a total cock-up," she said.

Mr Stulgis, who has relocated from Brisbane to Witta in recent times, said he was unaware of any feedback about the sculpture and declined to comment.

The sculpture was due to be officially launched this morning.

But the Daily was informed late yesterday that it had been removed to be modified more in keeping with the original design.

It is understood that the powdercoated finish will be altered to enhance the detail on the sculpture.

The 1.5m high hardwood and steel pillar is the second controversial sculpture in the area, which is building a reputation as an arts hub.

A $700,000 "egg" comprising stones with a fig tree on top, commissioned by the Queensland Arts Council for the Conondale National Park, has been criticised as a waste of money.

WHAT THE LOCALS SAY:

"For all the children to see it as they walk past?"

"It's a bit of an eyesore."

"You know, it might even become some sort of tourist attraction, people wanting photos with it."

"It looks like a big c*ck.

"It's a big chrome c*ck. It just needs a red helmet."

"Everyone's disgusted in it. It doesn't represent Kenilworth at all."

"It looks like a penis coming out of the ground with a fish coming out of it."
