SPORT has provided an economic boost for Ballina Shire.
There are two annual sporting events currently running, and another finished last weekend, which have brought at least 500 people into the shire.
There are 16 cricket teams - only one Ballina team - competing in this week's 23rd annual Under-13 five-day carnival and 96 players taking part in the 53rd Ballina Tennis Club's four-day New Year Open, with 75 of them having coming from outside the shire.
Last week, 64 bowlers played in the 50th invitational Summerland Singles held over three days at the Cherry Street Sports Club in Ballina, and double that in the Summerland Pairs held the week before - with many bringing their partners to Ballina.
Bowls co-ordinator Kris Lehfeldt said about 450 watched the final of the singles tournament, won by former Ballina bowler Aaron Teys.
Co-ordinator of the cricket competition, Geoff Jacobs, said the tournament was an economic boost for Ballina.
