Stunned by generosity

Jacklyn Wagner

THE GENEROSITY shown by people of the Northern Rivers has restored Kelly Tierney's faith in humanity after the Goonellabah home she rented was gutted by fire in September.

For Ms Tierney, partner James Turner and their children Jesse, 9, Mikayla, 8, Jacob, 6, Emily, 5, Lauchlan, 3, and Levi, 2, Christmas was looking bleak.

"I'd lost faith in humanity completely to be honest and I just kept to myself," Ms Tierney said.

Christmas presents bought through the year, the family's clothes, furniture, children's toys and all their belongings were lost.

But Ms Tierney said within days they were overwhelmed by the generosity of people from Lismore and Ballina.

"We lost everything and were left with basically the clothes we were wearing, so for so much help to come from all over the Northern Rivers was amazing.

"We had people around Lismore donating a lot of clothes and I have actually made a few friends out of it as well.

"Jodie Davis re-clothed all my boys basically which was wonderful; she is so beautiful."

Within a month of the blaze the family, who had been staying with relatives, had found a house in Lismore and moved in.

"It was the 30th of October that we got this house through the help of a friend, which was great."

Lismore Workers Club called for donations to the Tierney family appeal and donated supermarket vouchers to the family at a time when they were sorely needed.

"I think Christmas helped a lot because the kids had lost all of their toys and all their favourite things so we spoiled them a little bit.

Due to the outpouring of generosity, Jesse and Mikayla said they had the best Christmas ever.
