Sunshine Coast lives up to its name

SPARE a thought for the Mexicans down south.

While Sunshine Coast residents have been enjoying perfect winter days with crisp mornings and glorious sunshine, people living in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth are donning raincoats and warm jumpers.

Of course, it hasn't always been this way.

Many might have been wondering how the region got its name after it rained for 13 days straight between July 7 to 19.

June wasn't much better.

Weather Channel chief meteorologist Dick Whitaker said Tewantin experienced 241.9mm of rain in June, more than double the month's average at 119mm.

"The Sunshine Coast experienced a very wet first half of winter," Mr Whitaker said.

But it is showing signs of a dry August.

The perfect conditions experienced for the past week are expected to continue well into next week.

"We are only talking about fine and sunny weather up until Monday," Mr Whitaker said.

"It is back to what we would associate the dry season - winter - to look like."

At one stage it appeared weekends on the Coast were a recipe for rain, but this weekend promises to be picture perfect.

"We are expecting a high of 24 at Tewantin on Saturday (with a low of nine)," Mr Whitaker said.

The low is a "bit below" the average minimum for August of 11.6 degrees, but warmer than the chilling mornings earlier in the week.

It is also far warmer than yesterday's minimum for Canberra - a freezing minus three degrees.
