Surf rowers on display in Tugun for series clash

IF bronzed Aussie surf rowers are your thing, then Tugun beach is the place to be on Saturday, January 12.

Tugun Surf Lifesaving Club will host the fourth round of the 2012-2013 Australian Surf Rowers League which will see over 50 crews from 16 surf lifesaving clubs compete.

Sponsored by the Australian Navy, the event promises to be fast and furious and with a race distance of 400m involving wet starts and finishes, organisers aim to provide intense and tight racing.

League PR spokesman Darren Saffin said the competition was near the business end of the season and crews needed to be on their game.

"Crews battle with each other and the surf and with big waves expected, it should be an exciting spectacle," Mr Saffin said.

Crews will compete in Open Men, Open Women, Reserves, Under 23 Men, Under 23 Women, Under 19s and Masters categories in a round robin contest with the top six crews making the finals in each division.

The 2012-2013 Navy Australian Surf Rowers League Series consists of 26 events, held at some of Australia's premier beaches from November 2012 until February 2013.

The competition kicked off in November, last year, with some 400 rowers racing 55 boats at Surfers Paradise.

Weather conditions for the Tugun competition are expected to provide good sized surf and blue skies allowing for great viewing from the beach.

The league was established in 1992 as the International League of Australian Surfboat Rowers Inc (ILOR) and currently has over 3000 members from over 260 clubs providing over 450 crews.
