KIRRA'S Club champion Corey Ziems is looking forward to the annual Volcom Kirra Teams Challenge starting on Friday for a three day club event!
"I love competing in the Kirra teams! I love team events, it brings everyone together even rival clubs. There's always a good vibe around team comps and winning as a club is awesome because everyone plays a part in some way," said the 30 year old from Currumbin, former WQS professional who now balances his competing with working as a carpenter.
"I've been in Kirra since I was about 16 so about 15 years now. Kirra is a great club with great team spirit. They always have a great base crew down the beach supporting and helping out!"
Recently Ziems won their open club round at Kirra Point and so far this year the KSC (Kirra Surf riders Club) have been able to run two club championships back at the Point!
"All the clubs are tough these days but Snapper and D-bah have to be the favourites. Dbah have been on fire lately, all there surfers have been on fire and they're always there to have a good time! I love team events it brings everyone together even rival clubs. There's always a good vibe around team comps and winning as a club is awesome because everyone was a part of it in some way."
Corey will join Asher Pacey, Andre Teixeira, Mitch Duggan, Sam Clift, Sam Watson, plus juniors; Jake Cumberland and Max Tobin for Kirra.
A total of 36 clubs from Noosa to as far away as Margaret River will take part, including defending champions D-Bah, but will be without their club dynamo Brent "Brenno" Dorrington, who will be competing in the 6 star Newcastle on the same weekend.
Former winners, Snapper Rocks Surfriders, who are now planning their 50th anniversary for 2014, will be keen to rekindle their club competition winning record after losing to D-Bah in the State Jim Beam Surf Tad last month.
Kirra Club President Mike Tobin will use this event to give the junior members a run, "We will also be putting in a junior team to blood them for future years made up of the best of our U16 surfers - the junior squad is currently in training each week with Kirra coach Dave "Davo" Davidson."
The KSC were awarded the Surfing Queensland 2012 Club of the year in recognition for the Kirra's achievements, such as hosting the Volcom Teams, Juniors Teams comps, plus celebrating their 50th last year and laying to rest one of their best members Michael Peterson in the paddle out together with the Kirra Point rally.
Dubbed as, "The World's Largest Interclub Surfing Teams Event" the Volcom Teams 3 day event will be more than likely held at D-Bah although a swell increase mid-week could hold some hope for Kirra Point on the Friday opening day!
