Kirra surfers take out two club awards

THE Kirra Surfriders Club has bagged two club of the year awards.

After taking out the inaugural Surfing Qld club of the year for 2012 earlier this month, Kirra won the prestigious Simon Anderson Australian Club of the year title at the Surfing Hall of Fame Awards this week.

Kirra is now the third Queensland club after Snapper Surfriders and Burleigh Boardriders to be honoured with the award.

Club spokesman John Robin, who accepted the Hall of Fame award, said it capped a big year for the club.

"Last year was a big year for us... hosting the Volcom teams, junior teams comps, plus celebrating our 50th in 2012 and laying to rest one of their greatest members Michael Peterson with a paddle out for MP at Kirra, together with the Kirra Point rally to bring back Big Groyne."

Kirra's club champion Corey Ziems said he was looking forward to the annual Volcom Kirra Teams Challenge this weekend.

"I love competing in the Kirra Teams. I love team events, it brings everyone together even rival clubs.

"There's always a good vibe around team comps and winning as a club is awesome because everyone plays a part in some way," said the 30-year-old from Currumbin, a former WQS professional who now balances his competing with working as a carpenter.

"I've been in Kirra since I was about 16, so about 15 years now," Ziems said.

"Kirra is a great club with great team spirit. They always have a great base crew down the beach supporting and helping out."

Recently Ziems won their open club round at Kirra Point and so far this year the Kirra Surfriders Club has been able to run two club championships back at the Point.

"All the clubs are tough these days but Snapper and D'bah have to be the favourites. D'bah has been on fire lately, all their surfers have been on fire and they're always there to have a good time."

Corey will join Asher Pacey, Andre Teixeira, Mitch Duggan, Sam Clift, Sam Watson, plus juniors Jake Cumberland and Max Tobin for Kirra.

Some 36 clubs from as far away as Margaret River will take part including defending champions Duranbah, but they'll be without their club dynamo Brent "Brenno" Dorrington who'll be competing in the 6-star Newcastle.

Former winners Snapper Rocks Surfriders, who are planning next year's 50th anniversary, will be keen to rekindle their club competition winning record after losing to D'bah in the state Jim Beam Surftag last month.

Kirra Club president Mike Tobin will use the event to give junior members a run.

"We will be putting in a junior team to blood them for future years, made up of the best of our U16 surfers. The junior squad is currently in training each week with Kirra coach Dave "Davo" Davidson," he said.
