THE whole of the Tweed is hurting after Uki's historical Mount Warning Hotel was destroyed by fire at the weekend.

John Ross, of Tweed Heads, who has been frequenting the pub for 30 years, drove out to Uki today to pay his respects to the beloved watering hole.

He said the loss was devastating

"It's a disaster," he said.

"Back in the day it was a bikers club, there'd be 10 to 40 bikes out the front.

"Should've bought a bouquet of flowers or a can of VB or something.

"I'm stunned."

The extensively damaged pub attracted a lot of attention with hundreds of curious on-lookers today and yesterday.

Take Away Store owner Lorraine Ratjens said although it was a terrible situation, the people of Uki would join forces to replace what was lost.

"That's what I love about Uki," she said.

"We will sort something else out as a community and help each other out."

Facebook was how a lot of the town found out about the blaze Mrs Ratjens said.

"It just went off," she said.

"We couldn't believe it when we heard about it."
