NOVAK Djokovic may be the joker, but he wasn't laughing in Perth on Wednesday night after being shot down by the man who has long been a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

Bernard Tomic showed 2013 may be the year he realises his full potential by downing the world No.1 6-4 6-4 in their Hopman Cup clash.

The young Australian, who has set a goal of reaching top 10 in the world this year, was clearly the better player, particularly on serve.

He told the crowd he had been not only working hard on the physical side of his game, but also "working on my head a lot".

"Hard work does pay off," Tomic said.

"This (win) today was a very good sign. This was exactly what I needed before the Australian Open."

Djokovic, who had beaten Tomic in their three previous encounters, was full of praise for the 20-year-old.

"I've been saying the last couple of years that he's right up there with the up-and-coming players," the Serb said.

"Obviously for him, it's important to be consistent to be successful throughout the whole year."
