Top dog may race in Sydney

ALLAN Lang believes there is a good chance one of his record-breaking charges can make the transition from Far North Coast star to metropolitan champion.

Stratheden trainer Lang will send Paw Licking out for the first time over 484m at Friday's Casino meeting.

The 21-month-old is shaping up as a punters' dream, having recorded seven placings - including six wins - from eight races so far.

With track records already under its belt at Casino and Lismore over 411m and 420m respectively, Lang is hoping his racer can prove its stamina levels and step up to the longer distances at lucrative Sydney tracks.

"A lot of the good races are at 520m but many dogs cannot run that distance," Lang said.

"I think he can do it. He is coming home strongly and not slowing up which gives me the impression he can handle the longer distances.

"We will have to wait and see how he goes."

Lang bought the dog at 12 weeks old from fellow Stratheden breeder and trainer Charlie Northfield.

The racer is the son of Kingsbrae Di, which won 40 races from 114 outings for Northfield.

"As soon as he was broken in and we saw his speed, we knew he would be good," Lang said. "The Northfields have bred dogs for a long time and they know what they are doing.

"You do not get many dogs who are this good very often."

The racer has virtually dominated races at Casino and Lismore since debuting in October.

Lang said the dog was arguably the best in a 15-year training career.

"He is certainly the quickest," he said. "I have not had a record-breaker before. He doesn't give me any trouble. He is still a pup really so he just wants to play.

"Training is a hobby for me but it is good when you get one as good as this.

"It is certainly more fun (and) it helps pay the bills."

The field for Friday's Casino meeting still is being finalised.

Greyhound Racing NSW has confirmed the meeting will take place despite the ongoing boycott of state tracks by trainers over a funding row.
