Tweed men’s close call with great white common: expert

TWO Tweed men had a run-in with a huge great white shark.

It was reported Daniel Flemming and James Tate were about 4km off Pottsville beach when the 5m long shark came to check out their boat.

It's understood they fed the shark some tuna and it nudged their boat, but didn't cause any harm.

Southern Cross University marine ecologist Dr Daniel Bucher said it's not an uncommon occurrence.

Sharks' electro sensitive pores help them to find food, but Dr Bucher said large chunks of metal - like a fishing boat - released unusual signals.

"Sharks are predators, but they're also scavengers, so if anything big floating on the surface will attract their attention," Dr Bucher said.

It's believed Mr Flemming and Mr Tate got fairly close to the shark, being able to take underwater videos.

"I wouldn't be feeding them," Dr Bucher said.

"It can get them to associate boats with food."

Dr Bucher said a shark that size could swallow a grown man in two bites.
