Tweed residents angry about broadband service to the area

BROADBAND across the Tweed is in a state of disarray as some customers are stuck using mobile devices.

Residents from Kirra, Coolangatta, West Tweed and other suburbs are being referred to mobile broadband devices which are relatively expensive and slow compared to normal ADSL broadband lines.

Customers have received mixed messages from Telstra and Optus, with most stating that there was a lack of connectable ports in the area, or that they were too far from broadband interchanges.

An ADSL report from Telstra Wholesale confirmed that there were not many broadband ports in the area.

Richard Lundren of Kirra said he was well and truly over broadband issues.

"I found it really annoying that I couldn't get decent internet," he said.

"I was stuck with mobile broadband which is pretty slow and a lot more expensive.

"It's just strange in this day and age."

Ben Vivian of Tweed Heads had been battling the problem for years.

"We were in Douglas St Kirra and we couldn't get broadband internet," he said.

"It's the same problem with all providers.

"I've been told there's not enough ports.

"When we lived in West Tweed on Kennedy Dr we got told we were too far from the interchange."

Mr Vivian was stuck with Telstra's mobile broadband solution.

"The only one we can get reception for in Tweed is Telstra 4G," he said.

"It's $60 for eight gigabytes.

"But it's so slow you might as well not use it sometimes."

Mr Vivian was so desperate he considered dial-up internet, but was told by providers that they did not provide the service anymore.

An Optus spokesperson said that the problem was not isolated.

"That is actually a common occurrence," the spokesperson said.

"When the exchanges don't have enough capacity we offer mobile broadband."

The spokesperson said that Telstra was in control of all the ports in the area.

The Daily News Facebook page was filled with comments from people venting about the issue.

Helen Hitchens was tired of being unable to access ADSL broadband.

"I'm at the top of Banora Point/Terranora [and] the only internet I can get is via my mobile phone, if it's not windy," she said.

Lyn Mann from Murwillumbah was having the same problem.

"What about people in Murwillumbah that can't get broadband," she said.

Sarah Sullivan from Fingal Heads found she could not even use mobile broadband.

"Fingal Heads doesn't even get signal for Telstra mobile broadband," she said.

The Daily News was unable to reach Telstra for comment on the issue.
