TWEED Shire Council has thrown down the gauntlet to its residents and challenged them to save water by establishing a close relationship with their water meters.

The 'Meet your Meter' campaign was launched last week and aims to make significant savings in water consumption by limiting the use to 180 litres or less per person, per day.

At least this is the target Tweed Shire Council has set and for those residents who meet the challenge a number of prizes are in store.

The competition is open to Tweed residents who have a single residential water meter that services their house and only requires residents to take a reading each day for a week and record it on an entry form.

If the amount recorded is less than 180 litres, residents can submit their entry to council and will go into the draw to win movie pass vouchers to the value of $50 to the Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah or Hoyts at Tweed City.

The council's demand management program leader Elizabeth Seidl said "here's a chance to get involved, with the whole family or even your classmates".

"The campaign encourages residents to better understand how to read their water metres and, in the process, become more water wise and save money.

"Awareness about the amount of water used in everyday tasks is the first step in developing a responsible approach to water use.

"It's getting drier and it's time to meet your meter to check your water use," Ms Seidl said.

Residents can enter the competition by logging on to the council's website at tweed.nsw.gov.au/water or by picking up a fact sheet and other information from council offices in Murwillumbah or Tweed Heads.
