THE Tweed River Jockey Club held its first meeting of 2013 on Monday when it hosted the Mooball, Burringbar and Crabbes Creek Business Houses race day.

The meeting is traditionally run in the first few months of the year and holds an established place on the club's calendar.

Club secretary-manager Rachael Elliot told My Daily News she was pleased with the support of southern village locals who made their way to the track both individually and via a special bus organised by the jockey club.

"Together with the feature Victory Hotel Mooball Cup, the Mooball, Burringbar and Crabbes Creek Business Houses race day is pretty much an institution on our calendar and anything we can do to support local race fans thereabouts and help them enjoy their trip up to the track is worth it," Ms Elliott said.

"In all, we've had 11 southern village businesses come along and support us with sponsorship and they've had a good time out on the lawns today.

"It's been comfortable, overcast, racing weather after a couple of scorchers, and it's really been very pleasant so it's been a bit of an unexpected bonus for us.

"We've had a reasonable sized crowd of several hundred between the various groups coming along for a nice day out plus usual attendees.

Locally trained horses Congo and Royal Consort were both able to give their rivals a galloping lesson in their respective races.

Congo, a short $1.90 favourite took out race three, the 1530m Rainbow Fruits - Barry Marshall's Garage Class 3 handicap and is prepared on-course by Matt Dunn.

Congo has now won his last two starts effortlessly, both on home turf, with Glen Colless in the saddle.

The three-year-old Flying Spur gelding has won three times from nine career starts and has earned more than $75,000 in prize money.

Royal Consort trained by Carolyn Halliday, scored in the next event, race four the Burringbar Service Station - East Coast Asphalt & Concreting Class 1 handicap by over five lengths.

The four year old mare went out an equal $5 favourite.

Locally based apprentice Sam Payne was on board for both wins.

It turned out readers of the weekend My Daily News were given the good oil for the feature Victory Hotel Mooball Cup by Sky Racing's Gary Kliese.

He tipped Union Street to successfully defend her perfect Murwillumbah record, and the half-sister of 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed didn't disappoint.

Taking a strategic sit behind the pacemakers in the 2020m staying event, she came away in the straight to score with a length and a quarter to spare after going out a $3 equal favourite.

Music Maestro and Oriental Grace took out the minors.

Murwillumbah racecourse will host its next meeting on February 25.
