TWEED nonagenarian Doris "Dodo" Hall is back home after the first plane ride of her life that took her to Thailand for a ten-day shopping spree.
Mrs Hall's daughter Sylvia Adams and her husband Roy talked the 99-year-old into joining them on the trip and do some Christmas shopping in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
Mrs Hall said she loved flying and hoped to follow her trip to Thailand with a trip to France.
"I had a great time in the plane and the flight crew made a real fuss over me," Mrs Hall said.
"I got a bottle of champagne and every single stewardess and steward on the Thai Airways International flight queued up to meet me."
Mrs Adams said her mother remained fearless even when the plane was caught in some turbulence.
"I turned to Mum and said I didn't like the movement of the plane," Mrs Adams said.
"She told me she thought it was fun."
Mrs Hall said she felt a little uncomfortable in the huge south-east Asian city because of the enormous crowds and lack of personal space.
"I really enjoyed the day trips which took us outside Bangkok," she said
"We visited magnificent rose gardens some four hours outside Bangkok and enjoyed a river cruise on an old rice barge."
When the trio visited the rose gardens they were introduced to Charlie, the albino python, and Mrs Hall and her son-in-law took a ride on the back of an elephant.
"I loved the elephants," Mrs Hall said.
Mrs Adams said her mum had no problems dealing with the heat and humidity and acclimatised easily.
"Mum loved the Thai food apart from the spicy curries and even managed to knock back several Mai Tais during a night cruise on Bangkok's Chao Praya River ," Mrs Adams said.
Although the experience was something she wouldn't forget in a hurry, her next destination would probably not involve a visit to Asia.
"I'd love to go to Europe, France in particular, but would also like to visit Hawaii," she said.
"The time it takes to fly to Europe is a bit long though."
Although Mrs Hall is thinking about her next holiday, the next big landmark event is her 100th birthday in October this year.
