Spiritist chasing back-to-back wins at Grafton today

WHEN it comes to consistency you don't get many racehorses better than Spiritist who will be chasing back-to-back wins when he lines up at Grafton today.

Prepared by Jim Jarvis at Coffs Harbour and owned by Jarvis and his wife Kris, the six-year-old gelding has five wins, 10 seconds and six thirds from 24 starts.

"And he wasn't far away in the others," Jarvis said of the son of Invincible Spirit-Virancho that was bred by the couple.

"He's just a professional racehorse as indicated by his record.

"As honest as the day is long."

For Kris Jarvis, another win would prove an ideal tonic after the gelding scored a last-start win over 1005m at Ballina on January 20.

"Spiritist is Kris's horse. She loves fussing over him. He's one of her favourites," Jarvis said.

"Her health hasn't been the best over the past six months.

"The win at Ballina helped. Another win would be great for her."

Spiritist will run in the Maclean Bowling Club Hcp (1100m) with Nicholas Perrett in the saddle.

The field is headed by 13-time winner Prussian Secret who will carry a 64kg impost. Spiritist will carry 57kg.

"Usually Spiritist is penalised (weight wise) because of his consistency," Jarvis said.

"With the weights compressed it has helped us."

"He gets his opportunity tomorrow, it's a winnable race.

"He's drawn good and has trained on well and he loves the sting out of the ground.

"I would have preferred the race to be 1200m but the big long straight at Grafton will give him plenty of time to wind up."

Jarvis said Spiritist would have been a certainty beaten had he not won at Ballina.

"We didn't want to match speed early, Nicholas opted to not get involved in a speed battle up front," Jarvis said.

"He took a sit but got locked back on the fence. He had to bullock his way out. Once he got clear he started to extend and just got there.

"There looks to be a bit of speed in tomorrow. We won't get involved. Hopefully he can take a sit with cover and get out at the right time."
