Workers' Memorial Day remembers those killed on the job

BRISBANE and key regional cities were flooded with men in high-visible work gear on Wednesday morning as they gathered to commemorate workers injured and killed on the job.

Workers laid down black helmets in Brisbane to remember the 31 lives lost in workplaces in the past year.

Queensland Council of Unions assistant secretary Amanda Richards said Workers' Memorial Day served to remember the dead but also fight for the living.

She said more than 100,000 Queenslanders suffered work-related illnesses or injuries at work each year.

"Today is an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace accidents and ill health, and to promote campaigns and union organisation in the fight for improvements to workplace health and safety," she said.

The ceremonies took place in the shadow of possible changes to laws surrounding workplace health and safety, as well as workers' compensation.
