"A DREAM job" is how Jill Eddington described her appointment as the new director of literature for The Australia Council for the Arts.

The Byron Bay resident and former director and CEO of the Byron Bay Writers' Festival and Northern Rivers Writers' Centre, Jill will take up her hew role in January.

She will be responsible for providing leadership to the Australia Council's literature section and will be the senior advisor to its board, implementing its decisions and providing key links between the Council, writers and the publishing sector.

"This is the one job that I am happy to relocate to Sydney for," Jill said.

"Although I'll be back home as often as I can on the weekends to see my family, friends and the ocean."

Jill has worked extensively with the literary sector, most recently, in her role as curator of the Australian Society of Authors 50th Anniversary Program.

She has also worked with the State Library of Queensland, Arts Northern Rivers and has consulted to the wider arts community.

As the director of the Byron Bay Writers' Festival from 1999 to 2006, Jill established an extensive network of relationships with Australian and international writers and publishers and expanded audiences for the festival and ongoing programs.

Jill said she was looking forward to working with her colleagues at the Council.

"The writing and publishing industry is in a state of transformation with the growth of the online environment and the globalisation of writers, so the next few years will be challenging," she said.

"I want to ensure the role of writers in Australian culture continues and that writers can afford to continue to present us their works.

"We must ensure that our stories continue to be sold and to be heard, not just in Australia, but around the world."

Jill said she was incredibly honoured and a little bit astounded when she was offered her new role.

"I am thrilled to be taking on this new job for the next three years and hope to work with the board to seize opportunities for writers and the vibrant literature sector in Australia," she said.

"I will bring to the role a new and informed perspective of regional Australia, having worked here for 13 years.

"This is definitely the biggest challenge professionally I have taken on, but I will relish the position and bring my passion, gusto and excitement to it."
