Funds will help struggling families

NEARLY $200,000 in emergency relief funding being supplied to the Murwillumbah Community Centre by the Federal Government will go towards food vouchers for struggling local families, says the centre's manger Wendy Constantine.

“There are many families out there in the community really struggling to pay the rent, let alone put food on the table,” she said.

“We help with food vouchers. We've just had six new families we've never seen before seeking help.

“We have families who have high mortgages as well as those renting.

“They don't have to be on the dole to be in financial difficulty.”

Ms Constantine said the majority of $195,000 in funding for the centre announced by Federal Labor MP for Richmond Justine Elliot would go toward food vouchers.

Mrs Elliot this week announced an additional $1.28million over three years to help 10 local community organisations provide emergency relief services to vulnerable families and individuals.
