BY day she's a Chinderah administration worker.

By night Janelle Mason transforms into glamorous 1950s pin-up Madame Mason in vintage frocks and wing-tip eyeliner, red glossy lips and pin-curls.

The 27-year-old's fascination with the seemingly more innocent and glamorous era saw her crowned Miss Rods and Rockabilly in Brisbane earlier this month.

She won a crown and a sash as well as several thousands of dollars worth of vouchers for vintage clothes and a photo shoot at the third annual Rods and Rockabilly Festival.

It was Janelle's first time competing in such a pageant and she was up against some glammed-up competition.

"The girl who came runner up has been doing it for four years and is a burlesque dancer as well so she knew how to work a stage," she said.

The 10 contestants had to strut their stuff in three rounds - day swear, swim wear and evening wear.

Janelle and her husband Tom are equally devoted to the era.

Tom drives a 63 Blue Chev Bel Air.

In their spare time, they are restoring a 1937 Chevy pick-up which will be Janelle's ride.

"We live and breathe it now," she said.

"Every weekend we're either at a car show or at a swing dance event.

"It's a big scene on the Gold Coast and Brisbane to go out social dancing."

The next big event for the couple is Cooly Rocks On at Coolangatta in June which Janelle also hopes to compete at.
