34 take voluntary redundancy from Southern Cross University

AFTER SCU vice-chancellor Peter Lee announced they would have to make cuts to staffing to meet a $5 million cut in Federal Government funding, 49 people put up their hand for a voluntary redundancy.

SCU announced that of those 49 people, 34 of the applications had been accepted.

Professor Lee was unable to say if the university would have to look at further cuts and move to forced redundancies at this stage.

"We are still working through our 2014 budget process and that's quite an art or a science, and will depend upon a number of things, including the number of students enrolled next year," he said.

He expects the budget will be finalised around October/November and a decision will be made at that time.

Of the 34 positions to go, 12 are academic staff and the other 22 are non-academic positions.

Professor Lee said they were spread across all departments and all three SCU campuses, but that the majority were based in Lismore as it is the largest campus.

He said a change to the tax laws regarding self-education expenses may have an impact on enrolment numbers.

The amount that can be claimed is now capped at $2000, whereas it was previously not capped.

"I don't understand the policy; it is a disincentive for people to participate in education at a time when we should be valuing having a highly skilled workforce," Prof Lee said.
