49ers dig in to beat Packers for NFL playoff spot

THE San Francisco 49ers are headed to the NFC divisional playoffs for the third straight season after downing Green Bay 23-20.

A 33-yard field goal from Phil Dawson (pictured) with three seconds on the clock secured the win for the 49ers in freezing conditions in Wisconsin.

San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick won the battle of the quarterbacks against Aaron Rodgers, passing for 227 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

San Francisco will meet the second-seeded Carolina Panthers in Charlotte on Monday morning.

In yesterday's other wildcard game, the heavily-favoured Cincinnati Bengals were eliminated after losing 27-10 at home to the San Diego Chargers.

The Bengals, unbeaten on their own turf all season, now have the sixth-longest losing streak in the playoffs in NFL history, stretching back 23 years. San Diego will take on the top-seeded Broncos in Denver on Monday morning.
