4WD obstacles fail at Fingal

TEMPORARY measures to keep four-wheel drives off sand dunes at Fingal have failed.

Fingal Coastcare president Kay Bolton said some of the holes dug in trails to deter drivers from accessing the beach had been filled in.

"It was done on purpose by four-wheel drive owners," Ms Bolton said.

Despite the action of a few, she said, most people have accepted it and were not going onto the beach with vehicles.

"It's a lot quieter in town than last year and we don't think it will get too busy after Christmas," she said.

Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council manages the spit and has fought a long battle to keep four-wheel drives off the dunes.

In October the TBLALC employed a security guard to patrol the dunes and previously they contracted a front-end loader to dig up access trails.

The land council was unavailable for comment on tracks to the beach being reopened.
