90 years and still bowling strong

TWEED Heads Bowls Club chairman Peter Howell put business matters aside yesterday to welcome Coolangatta Bowls Club members onto the green beside him.

The rival clubs were originally one club, known as the Tweed Heads Coolangatta Bowls Club, and yesterday they celebrated their 90th anniversary.

Mr Howell said the clubs didn't think of each other as competitors, but worked together to serve the community.
“This is a very big milestone for both clubs,” Mr Howell said.

“It's such a wonderful thing to get together and celebrate this event.”

More than 250 bowlers packed the green, including life members who could recall playing at the original Coral St location more than 35 years ago, and bowling greats, with the likes of international champion Kelvin Kerkow joining the celebrations.

Mr Howell, who is in his seventh term as chairman and has 16 years of history with the club, said he was honoured to be part of the organisation.

“It's just such a great club,” he said.

“It is honestly recognised as one of the greatest bowls clubs in the world and we can thank the chairman and board of directors from generations past who have set us up to be here today.”
