Bowls club celebrates 90 years
THE week-long festivities surrounding the 90th birthday celebrations for Murwillumbah Bowls club came to an end on Saturday night with the anniversary dinner which was attended by nearly 100 members and guests.
Five very special members were guests of honour - life members, Ron Spence, Bruce Smith, Bob Watson and two "Lifies" who did the club proud on the national and international bowls scenes, Brian Gillett and Patricia "Pat" Smith.
Pat Smith won a host of club, regional and state titles and also represented Australia at the 1982 Edinburgh and 1986 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, while among a swag of prestigious wins for Mr Gillett were a trifecta of titles in the 1977-79 Australian Pairs Championships.
Mr Gillett and Ms Smith have been members of the club for in excess of 50 years and still show deft touches on the greens in regular games of social bowls.
"It was a tremendous evening and gave all of us the opportunity to catch up with old friends and reminisce about our time as members of Murwillumbah Bowls Club," said organiser Lex Fletcher.
Three tournaments also highlighted the week's celebrations.
Every club in the district was represented at a day-long women's carnival on Wednesday, the men contested a 3-bowls pairs tournament on Thursday and $1500 in prize money was up for grabs in the open 3-bowls pairs on Saturday.
Saturday's event was sponsored by Murwillumbah Men's Bowls Club, Murwillumbah Services Memorial Club and life member Bruce Smith's business, Bruce Smith Cabinets.
Murwillumbah Bowls Club was formed in 1921 when plans were submitted mid-year to build one green and two tennis courts.
The green was ready for play on December 10, 1921 when just about all 52 male members turned up, ready to roll.
It wasn't until July, 1952, that women were admitted as members of the club.
