Jump in, the water's warm

WITH winter here there is no better time to head to the beach.

Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club has started a winter swim club for those looking for a refreshing change this season.

Club president Jim Purdon, a founding member of the Cooly Cobias, started the club to give people an opportunity to stay fit over the winter months.

Next week several members will compete in the Vanuatu Ocean Swim.

Mr Purdon is celebrating his 70th birthday while on the trip.

"It was my cousin's, Bruce Rodger's, idea," Mr Purdon said.

"He suggested that we go to Vanuatu Ocean Swim.

"My wife and I were going to do a cruise."

The Vanuatu Open Water Swim is a 3.2km swim that goes around Iririki Island, in Port Vila Harbour on June 7-14.

Mr Purdon said ocean swimming was a challenge.

"The prevailing wind in winter is a southerly in Coolangatta and it's usually great conditions," he said.

The winter swim club meets at the Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club every Sunday at 8.30am.
