Numbers of those fronting Magistrates courts on the rise

THE number of people appearing before a magistrates court across the state has risen significantly over the past year.

The Queensland Magistrates Court annual report, which was tabled in State Parliament, revealed increases of more than 4000 defendants and 13,700 charges last year compared to the year before.

In his report, Chief Magistrate Judge Brendan Butler said there had also been an increase in the number of domestic violence and child protection applications over the past year.

"In the adult criminal jurisdiction we dealt with just on 200,000 defendants during the year," he said.

"I am proud of the way in which magistrates and judicial registrars rose to these challenges in the past year."

Judge Butler said this was his last annual report before his five-year term as Chief Magistrate expired.

"During those five years the court, which is Queensland's most numerous, has continued to grow and change," he said.

"For most Queenslanders the magistrates court is the place where they are most likely to see the judiciary at work.

"Fully staffed, it is a court of 90 magistrates who are posted to 32 locations throughout the state."
