New urgency for NBN: online video key to retraining

ALMOST 40% of Australians are using online videos to help learn new skills, from cooking and 'do-it-yourself' projects to learning a new language.

A survey funded by the NBN, asked 500 respondents for their thoughts about online learning.

It showed some 39% of Australians were now using online video to learn new skills, 48% of whom watched 'DIY skills' videos.

Some 48% also used online videos to cook new recipes, 30% learnt a new craft and 20% were learning new languages online.

The results showed Baby Boomers were more likely to search for DIY project advice, while Gen X and Y respondents were more likely to search for recipes.

The Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures' Dr Phillip Branch said the research showed how curious people were.

"This type of learning ultimately means we are happier," he said.
