SportingBet odds have Clive Palmer at a total loss

LARGER-than-life billionaire and political hopeful Clive Palmer is spruiking his best and brightest candidates, but so far, the smart money suggests he will not win a single seat.

During his press conference in Brisbane on Monday, the magnate praised his candidates, Rob Messenger in the seat of Hinkler and John Bjelke-Petersen in Maranoa.

The latest odds from SportingBet has both candidates a long way behind the Coalition and ALP, with Mr Messenger at $31 and Mr Bjelke-Petersen at $26.

Bookies are not taking bets on his chances of winning a Senate seat, where former rugby league legends Glenn Lazarus and Matt Adamson lead the charge for Queensland and New South Wales respectively.

However, the Palmer United Party is at $1.18 to win no seats in the House of Representatives.

It was perhaps these figures that prompted one journalist in Brisbane to ask why Mr Palmer thought nobody took him or his party seriously.

Mr Palmer suggested it was thanks to Rupert Murdoch's influence in Australia's media landscape through News Limited, which he said also helped explain why the journalist was asking.

When the journalist responded that he was not employed by News Limited, Mr Palmer moved to the next talking point, referring to his policies on resources and eliminating paid lobbyists.

After now completing the "first phase" of his plan, to amass candidates, the PUP is shifting into a new phase of "what we can do for the Australian people".

"The major party duopoly in this country is tired and worn out with policies that reflect poorly on the state of our country and Australians want another option," Mr Palmer said.

He said further policies and a "shadow ministry" would be unveiled during the election campaign.
