Wellcamp Airport begins operating today despite objections

AUSTRALIA'S newest airport will be open for business from today with the first flight expected to touch down during the early hours of the morning.

The Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, located west of Toowoomba, will welcome QF2016 from Sydney at 8.35am with the first flight leaving the airport shortly after.

Qantaslink has announced it will fly to Sydney 11 times per week from the airport.

Smaller carrier REX Airlines plans to start services to regional destinations from the airport in the new year.

Sydney radio personality Alan Jones has waged an on-air war against the project claiming the Toowoomba Regional Council had rushed through the approval process without any consideration of environmental impacts, community complaints and perceived threat to the nearby Oakey Army Aviation Centre.

The businessman who is behind the project has disputed the claims.
