Paedophile told victim 'this happens to all boys'

A CONVICTED paedophile living in a Dalby retirement home has faced one of the victims of his past.

Ian Verdon Fehlhaber, 77, served two and a half years in prison after being sentenced in Rockhampton in 1987 for sex crimes against teenage boys at BoysTown.

He appeared in Dalby District Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to one count of sodomy, downgraded from three to spare the victim the stress of cross-examination, the court heard.

In 1980 aged 13, the victim was sent to BoysTown at Beaudesert - a home for state wards operated by the De La Salle Brothers from 1961 to 2001.

In 1979 Fehlhaber, then 42, and his then-wife were assigned to the victim as a carer over the Christmas holidays.

Fehlhaber and his wife took the victim to a friend's home in Yeppoon.

The court heard that one night the victim was dragged out from under the bed, where he was hiding, and sodomised to the point of injury.

Nothing happened for 33 years until police targeted BoysTown in Operation Kilo Lariat in 2013, resulting in accusations by the victim against Fehlhaber.

The victim, now 35, cannot be named for legal reasons. He was on the verge of tears while giving his testimony.

"You took advantage... you said that's what happens to all boys," he said. "I was screaming... you didn't seem to care about the fear and pain you were causing me. I hoped it was a bad dream and that I would wake up and everything would be okay."

The victim said BoysTown did nothing about the abuse.

"Not long after you came to see me. It was like you were only coming to see if you got away with what you did," he said.

District Judge Paul Smith heard from barrister John Bailey that a prison sentence could affect Fehlhaber's health, and cost him his Centrelink benefits.

He sentenced Fehlhaber to two years imprisonment, up for parole in three months.
