A lesson in giving

ST Joseph's Primary School students took time out of class yesterday to help local homeless and marginalised families.

The You Have A Friend charity collects food and clothes and distributes them to the most needy families in the Tweed shire and southern Gold Coast.

Founder John Lee said the students benefited from the class-on-class Can Can competition to see which group could collect the most cans of food.

“The students really get a lot out of it,” Mr Lee said.

“They know the food helps struggling mums and dads.

“One boy asked me if the money was going overseas or staying in the area, so I can tell they are really thinking about it and want to know where their donations are going.”

Mr Lee said he received regular support from local schools.

“About four schools in the area collect food and donate it on a monthly roster,” he said.

“St Joseph's at Tweed Heads decided that this time they'd really get involved and actually make an activity for the kids out of it.”

Mr Lee founded the not-for-profit organisation three years ago.

It now has 65 volunteers and delivers 300 meals a week.
