Espresso bar with Melbourne twist opens in South Tweed

A NEW coffee shop with a Melburnian twist has opened in Tweed Heads South.

With its chic lights, antique furniture and graffiti wall art, Ground Control is nestled in the industrial landscape of Industry Dr.

Glen and Effie Anthony have taken inspiration from trendy city coffee houses to fit the store.

"We wanted to combine industrial and grungy with elegance and romance, which is why we have used Victorian furniture and a glass chandelier," Mr Anthony said.

It's got a boardroom-style conference space in the mezzanine, available for non-profit groups to meet.

"We are passionate about environment and native wildlife conservation, so if any of the local groups would like to get in touch with us to hold meetings up in the board room, they are welcome."

Barista courses and coffee tastings are also on offer.

For those who find a slim soy decaf is passé, a cashew-milk or Greek coffee with honey are on the menu - but there's no quiche in sight: "We have decided to focus solely on coffee, so we're not a cafe - we're an espresso bar."

The couple moved from Ballina, where they owned a cafe.
