A showcase for our artistic talent
AN artist directory for the Tweed region promises to be nothing like the Yellow Pages.
Creators Lesley Gail and Gloria Roszkiewicz, both Murwillumbah artists, said their proposed book, printed on high-quality, glossy paper, would be more like a coffee table art guide.
Their research had identified a need for a quality publication to help to promote the wealth of artists and craftspeople in the Tweed Region, Ms Roszkiewicz said.
“As artists ourselves we recognise and wish to support the rich creative diversity of the Tweed Region, by showcasing the skills in the visual arts through a series of arts directories, beginning with 50 women artists,” she said.
“The Tweed Shire Council's Cultural Development Program supports the findings of our investigations and has allocated us seed funding through the Salt Cultural Arts Fund to initiate this project.”
The classy directory would also allow artists to let people know about their websites or workshops they may be holding, Ms Gail said.
“As gallery coordinator at Escape Gallery I so often have enquiries from members of the public wishing to commission local painters, sculptors or other artists for particular works, as they have not been able to find them on websites,” Ms Gail said.
“A coffee table directory would be an ongoing way to advertise and promote artists' work, as well as being part of a quality publication coming from our local area.
“And it looks good on your CV if you have been published.”
Their aim is to showcase local artists in a smart, upmarket book, which will retail at about $40.
Initially they plan to showcase 50 women and then follow up with other publications. “This is an opportunity for artists to go into their studios and work and let us do the promotional work,” Ms Gail said.
Ms Roszkiewicz and Ms Gail are currently calling for expressions of interest from women artists to take part in the project.
