A sporting chance for Pottsville school
A POTTSVILLE school has called on the community for support through a GoFundMe page to help propel it towards a primary school state Australian rules football championship in Sydney.
After six knockout rounds, Pottsville Beach Public School's Aussie rules side became the Far North Coast Knockout Gala Day winners and will be contesting for a Primary School Sports Association state title against champions from the South Coast, Riverina and Sydney Metropolitan zones in Blacktown on Monday.
The side's journey began in June with wins over Banora Point, South Tweed and Bilambil primary schools, before securing the Far North Coast title with a win over Byron Bay in July.
As Far North Coast champions, the side defeated Coffs Harbour Primary School and Newcastle region's Biddabah Primary to become North Coast champions.
The side performed extremely well throughout the tournament, recording convincing wins except for a tight battle with Byron Bay.
Pottsville Beach teacher and team manager Caitlin Brooker said the side had a great balance of children who played club football on weekends combined with sporty and athletic kids, as well as a good mix of boys and girls.
She said while the side was confident of performing well against strong competition - particularly from the Riverina - they were out to have fun while competing.
"I think we'll come up against some mean competition and they're super excited,” Brooker said.
"I think it's all about the fun at this stage, but they're focussed and once they're on the field they'll give it 100%.”
The team's trip to Sydney comes at significant expense, with the school estimating a cost of about $5000 for transport and flights
Kicked off by a player's father, Ben Charlton, the fundraising GoFundMe page titled 'Get the team to Sydney' was yesterday sitting at $1260.
"We are putting it out to the community in hope we can minimise the individual financial burden for each family,” Charlton said.
"Any financial help will be greatly appreciated.
"Get behind these young Pottsville kids. They are off to represent us, the least we can do is support (them).”
