More sport for the Tweed is all part of the plan

AS part of its strategy to attract lucrative sporting events to the region, Destination Tweed will host a series of sports workshops next week.

The workshops will involve meetings with representatives from key sports clubs in the area to discuss their ability to assist with running various events.

"Destination Tweed has been working with Sports Marketing Australia since late last year to attract suitable events to the Tweed," Destination Tweed CEO Bill Tatchell said.

"In just a few short months, we have secured four state titles for 2013 which will collectively bring an estimated 3000 plus visitors to the Tweed and generate a direct economic benefit of close to $7 million.

"This is an outstanding result at this early stage of our partnership with Sports Marketing Australia and is a clear indication of the Tweed's potential to generate substantial results by bringing more of these events to the region."

Part of Destination Tweed's plan is to develop a Capacity and Capability Assessment, which will provide a thorough analysis of the region's sporting facilities.

This will include analysing infrastructure, natural and human resources, accommodation options and an event calendar to identify appropriate event timing.

"Next week's workshops will allow us to meet with sports club representatives and work out how and to what extent they are able to help host relevant events in terms of providing volunteers and facilities," Sports Marketing Australia's senior analyst, Trevor McGaw said.

"There is a significant potential benefit for local sports clubs to generate cash flow by, say, offering their club premises as the host venue and providing members to serve as volunteers.

For instance, through catering, beverage sales and fund-raising activities, the host venue of an event could boost their coffers by up to $30,000 in just one weekend."

Mr McGaw said the Capacity and Capability Assessment will be an invaluable tool to highlight exactly what the region offers to events such as the 2018 Commonwealth Games and for teams looking to stay in the Tweed.

"Having all the information available on the Tweed's sporting facilities, accommodation venues, and local clubs is exactly what we need to bring them to the Tweed and maximise the potential economic benefits of the Games."

The workshops will be held on April 22, 23 and 24 and more information is available by calling 02 6672 4955 or emailing wendy@destinationtweed.com.au.
