A Virgin flight is cheap but credit charge sky high

A SENATOR has questioned how an airline can fly across a continent for less than $100 but has to charge up to $30 per person to process a credit card.

"You run such an incredibly efficient, competitive airline business that can fly people across this continent for less than $100 but when it comes to processing payments it seems to be the most expensive option," Labor Senator Sam Dastyari said to Virgin Australia general counsel Adam Thatcher.

The committee heard Virgin charges $7.70, $10 or $30 per person credit card surcharge to buy tickets.

Mr Thatcher said despite more than 70% of tickets being bought with a credit card, the airline wanted to provide an option to consumers rather than rolling the cost into tickets.
