Abbott hints financial assistance for bushfire victims
MORE than 500 firefighters and 31 aircraft continue to battle an out-of-control bushfire in the Adelaide Hills that has destroyed 26 homes and more than 100 outbuildings.
Crews faced a race against time earlier this week to contain three fire fronts which burnt more than 12,500ha before temperatures across the region soared into the high 30s.
The crippling temperatures are expected to remain across the region for the rest of the week.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott, speaking from the United Arab Emirates, hinted that victims of the bushfires could be in line for additional Federal Government assistance.
"The standard national disaster relief and recovery arrangements are already in place," he said.
"We will shortly have a little bit more to say on the Centrelink payments which are often made in circumstances like these."
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted rainfall of up to 30mm across Adelaide over the next week with the majority forecast to fall on Friday and Saturday.
